Pre-electrical Apprenticeship: You need to complete a Certificate II Electrotechnology (UEE22011) course through a school based apprenticeship, VET/CAL program or National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) Education & Careers. This is the best way to know whether becoming an electrician is a career path that you would want to take up.

Electrical Apprenticeship: You are employed as an electrical apprentice with NECA Education & Careers or another electrical employer and complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology (UEE30811) through a registered training organisation. The electrical apprenticeship generally lasts four years.

Licensing: You need to pass the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA), sometimes known as an ‘A Grade Exam’, that all electricians take before being awarded their licence. Passing the assessment and becoming a licence holder means that you can do all types of electrical installation work without a supervisor.
