A SIFE Team may be formed at any university and is comprised of a group of SIFE students, a Faculty Advisor and a Business Advisory Board.
The team’s activities are governed by SIFE Membership Guidelines which are found in the SIFE Team Handbook.
SIFE students are enrolled tertiary students who design, develop, deliver and document their team’s SIFE community outreach projects. There is no lower limit on the numbers of students in a SIFE Team but a group of 10 is a good starting point.
A Faculty Advisor is an academic or professional staff member of a university. They mentor their SIFE students, attend SIFE meetings and activities and are the primary representative of their SIFE team with SIFE Australia.
In Australian universities the Faculty Advisor roles are distributed almost evenly between academics and professional staff. Some Faculty Advisors use SIFE as a platform for research about community engagement and student development.
Faculty Advisors are busiest in the lead up to the national conference in July and their role is facilitated by time release or recognition of the role as a community service one.
A Business Advisory Board (BAB) is an integral part of the team and can be comprised of university, business and community members. The BAB provides guidance and advice for the team on projects, funding and business practice. BABs meet to review proposed projects, monitor project progress and to provide input into the annual report.
The Faculty Advisor and SIFE Team president are members of the BAB and SIFE Australia can assist teams with finding BAB members.
