SIFE Australia, part of the SIFE global organisation, brings university students and staff together with business to enable the students to apply business concepts in the development of community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
Internationally SIFE operates in 38 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, UK and USA.
Universities setting up a SIFE team should do the following.
Identify a Faculty Advisor as a student mentor.
The Faculty Advisor should get in touch with SIFE Australia to assist them in their role.
Students are often recruited from a specific discipline or course and they will need to devote some of their own time to contribute to SIFE projects. Many students come from business disciplines but others come from health, education, engineering and the arts.
Start with the Faculty Advisor and Team President as members and engage members of the local business community.
Team members' details should be recorded in the Active Team Sheet which can be accessed via the SIFE International website.
Formal affiliation may have many benefits, including financial assistance and banking facilities, help to get organised, to plan and run meetings, a web page and insurance for the SIFE Team activities.
Team members should access the SIFE Team Handbook which provides a wealth of useful information including how to establish an effective team and develop quality projects.
After reading the relevant section in the SIFE Team Handbook students should identify a group by conducting an analysis of their economic, social and environmental needs. They should then discuss with the group, their Faculty Advisor and Business Advisory Board how they should progress.
