In 2009, 24 of the SIFE countries will be eligible for Financial Literacy Grants. In partnership with the HSBC Global Education Trust and HSBC Holdings plc, SIFE is offering grants for financial literacy projects to be completed between January and July 2009. Grants will range from US$250 to US$1,000 and be dispersed in two allotments. All eligible SIFE teams are encouraged to apply. Before submitting application, please review the Frequently Asked Questions as they have been updated for the 2009 grant process.

SIFE and HSBC will choose together which projects to fund. The key criteria for deciding how to allocate 2009 HSBC Financial Literacy Grants will include:

1. Quality: Is it a quality project with clear, relevant and realistic goals?;

2. Results: Is there a commitment to deliver meaningful and measurable results that will have a positive impact on financial literacy education in both the short-term and long-term?;

3. Challenging and innovative: Is the project challenging and innovative and does it have the potential to reach a large audience?;

4. Sustainability: Does the project have a well thought-through action plan to ensure the sustainability of its achievements including effective budgeting, the use of teamwork and/or partnerships and knowledge sharing?; and,

5.  SIFE Criteria 4:  Is the project likely to fulfill the fourth SIFE competition judging criteria for 2008-2009 (i.e. "How effectively did the SIFE team measure and demonstrate that it created economic opportunity by helping others develop the financial management skills necessary to achieve financial independence?").
